Winter Skincare SIMS Hospital

Winter skincare is easy to ignore but with aggressive climate change, we may never know how various aspects of climate change can affect our skin. Skin is the largest part of our body and it is what keeps our muscles and everything else together. Winter seems to only get worse with every passing year. These external factors rob your skin of its natural moisture, leaving it prone to excessive dryness, flaking, redness, and sensitivity, which can lead to flare-ups of pre-existing skin conditions like eczema or rosacea.

Needless to say, you must stay on top of your skincare routine to keep your skin texture healthy throughout the season. Check out these winter skin care tips to help restore hydration to your skin!

Don’t skip your SPF even during the winters

One of the most common misconceptions about sunscreen is that it is unnecessary on gray, cloudy days. While UVB (the cause of sunburns and skin cancers) levels are lower in the winter, UVA levels are still high, causing sun damage and premature skin aging. It's for this reason that dermatologists list wearing sunscreen as one of their top non-negotiable winter skin care tips. Even if you don't see the sun, use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50 wherever you go outside.

Include more cleansing creams, balms, and natural oils for skin hydration

Switching to oil or cream-based cleansers in the winter would solve this problem. They are excellent at removing makeup and deep-seated debris from the skin without removing the skin's moisture while increasing hydration levels and maintaining the skin barrier. Using makeup-cleaning solutions can harm your skin as your skin is more prone to dryness during winter.

Keep hydrating your skin

During the winter, your regular petroleum-based moisturizers may not be as effective. Instead, try some essential oils. After a bath or shower, pat your skin lightly with a towel and apply the oils while your skin is still damp. Instead of evaporating in the air, the oils can seal in your skin's moisture. If you don't like the way essential oils feel on your skin, try a moisturizer made with pure cocoa butter.

Buy humidifiers for your house

Indoor air can be drying to the skin during the winter. The less humidity there is inside your home as the temperature rises. Humidifiers are useful for reintroducing moisture into your home's air. You can leave this on overnight to keep your skin moisturized and avoid waking up with dry, flaky skin. The weather may be harsh, cold, and dry outside, but your skin does not have to be. Simply follow our helpful tips to keep your skin soft, supple, and dewy until the season changes.

Drink a lot of water

We drink less water during the winter because we are more likely to drink hot beverages instead. Coffee and tea, however, are insufficient to keep our bodies hydrated. When we are dehydrated on the inside, it manifests itself on the outside, specifically on our skin. Maintain your daily water intake of six to eight glasses. If you want a hot drink, a cup of hot water with some lemon will keep you warm, fuzzy, and hydrated.
