7th International Aortic Summit @ ITC Grand Chola
The 7th International Aortic Summit was inaugurated by Mr. Ravi Pachamoothoo, Chairman, SRM Group on 6 January 2017 at ITC Grand Chola, Chennai. This conference organized by ICAAD (Institute for Cardiac & Advanced Aortic Disorders) along with SIMS Hospital is one of the largest conferences in aortic disease management in South East Asia. More than 50 senior faculty members from different parts of the world like Italy, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, USA, France, Switzerland, China, Thailand and neighboring countries delivered lectures and displayed videos of complex operations and latest techniques in aortic aneurysm surgery. In addition, senior doctors from the neighboring countries also participated in this meeting. Senior cardiovascular surgeons, interventional radiologists and interventional cardiologists from India discussed various topics related to aortic aneurysm management. Around 300 delegates attended the meeting to learn the latest developments.
ICAAD at SIMS Hospital is one of the largest dedicated aortic centres in India. Dr. V. V. Bashi, Senior cardiovascular and Aortic Surgeon, heads the team and is assisted by Dr. A.B. Gopalamurugan, Senior Interventional Cardiologist and Dr. Aju Jacob, Senior Cardiovascular Anaesthetist. This centre is equipped with all the facilities and manpower to handle all aspects of the disease related to the aorta round the clock with results on par with any international centre in the world. The cost of treatment in the Centre at SIMS Hospital is much less comparted to any other centre in the Western world.
Aorta is the largest blood vessel which carries pure blood to all parts of the body. Aneurysm is a big bulge in the aorta. This bulge can occur at its origin in which case it is very close to the aortic valve and coronary arteries, at the aortic arch where blood vessels go to the brain and both arms or at the abdomen where blood vessels originate to the organs like kidneys, liver, stomach and intestines. When the Aorta is enlarged more than 1 1Ž2 times its normal size, it is called an aneurysm. Approximately about 600,000 – 700,000 people suffer from various types of Aortic aneurysm in India which need some type of surgical treatment or Keyhole procedure with Endovascular graft. But, today in India we are doing less than 1000 cases. Rest of the patients either fail to come to the hospital for lack of resource or knowledge or die suddenly due to various complications related to the disease.
