7th NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ‘DAY SURGERY – ADSCON 2014’ AT SRM INSTITUTES FOR MEDICAL SCIENCE, Vadapalani

Chennai, 19th April 2014: The 7th National Conference of the Indian Association of Day Surgery “ADSCON 2014: Day Surgery – Making It Happen” is being jointly hosted by SRM Institutes For Medical Science, Vadapalani (SIMS), Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) – Chennai Chapter, Indian Society of Anesthesiologists (ISA) – Chennai Chapter and www.chennaidaysugery.com. The two international pioneers - Dr. Ian Jackson, President, International Association of Ambulatory Surgery (IAAS), and Dr. William A Horton, Chief Editor – ‘One Day Journal’ of the British Association of Day Surgery (BADS) in the field of day surgery & anesthesia - and other eminent anesthesiologist and surgeons from all over India participated. More than 200 delegates from various institutions participated and presented papers.

SRM Institutes for Medical Science, Vadapalani (SIMS) inaugurated its day surgery unit coinciding with this two-day conference. Live surgical and anesthesia procedures were relayed to the delegates on the first day. The conference was primarily organized to promote the concept of ‘Day Surgery’ with a unique ‘live operative workshop’ where they showcased the importance and involvement of Anesthesiologists, Surgeons, and Nursing Professionals in taking day surgery to the next level in clinical practices.

In his special message to the delegates of ADSCON 2014, Mr. Ravi Pachamoothoo, Chairman, SRM Institute for Medical Sciences, said that he was very proud of the fact that, SIMS will have a full-fledged SIMS Day Surgery facility right from its inception. “Developing nations such as India have a huge demand for quality healthcare and the available hospital beds are inadequate to meet the rising demand. Day Surgery is a welcome step in the right direction. Releasing invaluable hospital beds for complicated surgery is a necessity, particularly among populous nations such as India. Simultaneously, day surgery reduces substantially the cost of hospitalization and the middle class sees it as a means of immense savings, without compromising on the quality of healthcare. We are proud of the fact that SIMS Day Surgery will be a key feature of SRM Institutes for Medical Science right from its inception.” stated Mr. Pachamoothoo.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Patta Radhakrishna, Head of Surgical Gastroenterology, SIMS, and Organizing Chairman of this conference said “We are extremely honored to host this 7th national conference ADSCON 2014 and privileged to announce the launch of SIMS Day Surgery Unit at SIMS with a motto “Surgery Today, Home Today”. Presently about 70% of all surgical operations in all fields of surgery are being performed in daycare worldwide. However, in India, only about 15-20% of all surgical operations are done in daycare. With increasing awareness, I’m delighted to see clinicians and patients more inclined to the concept of day surgery.”

Dr. Ian Jackson, York Teaching Hospital, UK, and Dr. William A Horton, Aintree University Hospital, UK, delivered a session sharing the secrets of the enormous success of the day surgery concept in western countries. “The aim of the IAAS is to promote the development and growth of high-quality daycare surgery worldwide. To this end, we encourage an international exchange of ideas and stimulate programs of education, research, and audit,” said Dr. Ian Jackson.

Many engaging scientific programs, live operative workshops showcasing the anesthetic and surgical daycare techniques, hands-on sessions with ultrasound, and informative lectures by eminent speakers were the highlight of the second day of the conference. “We aim to provide information about how day surgery should be practiced and how to deal with Patients, Relatives, Caregivers, and Health Care Professionals.” Dr. William Horton added.

Dr. Naresh Row, President of Indian Association of Day Surgery (IADS), Dr. Nisha Khushalani – Honorary Secretary, Dr. Paras Jain, and Dr. Surendranath V – Treasurers and Dr. Pooja Bagdi Agrawal – Organizing Secretary – participating in the two day session said that the success of day surgery can be attributed to advances in surgical technologies.
